Summary:

The OMC Substance Abuse Counselor provides support and guidance to individuals struggling with addiction. The ideal candidate will conduct assessments, develop personalized treatment plans, facilitate counseling sessions, and connect clients with community resources. This role requires strong communication skills, empathy, and a commitment to helping clients achieve long-term recovery and improved well-being.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate clients’ substance use, mental health, and social history.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment results and client goals.
  • Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions focused on addiction recovery and relapse prevention.
  • Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support during critical moments.
  • Educate clients and their families about substance abuse, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, social workers, and community organizations to coordinate comprehensive care.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Assist clients in developing life skills and connecting with community resources such as support groups, employment services, and housing.
  • Stay current on best practices, treatment techniques, and relevant laws/regulations in substance abuse counseling.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Understanding of substance abuse disorders, addiction treatment modalities, and recovery processes.
  • Familiarity with behavioral health issues, co-occurring disorders, and trauma-informed care.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, ethical standards, and confidentiality regulations (e.g., HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2).
  • Awareness of community resources and support networks for addiction recovery.
  • Strong counseling and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with clients.
  • Proficient in conducting assessments, treatment planning, and case management.
  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to facilitate individual and group therapy sessions effectively.
  • Documentation and record-keeping skills, ensuring compliance with legal and organizational requirements.
  • Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple clients and administrative tasks.
  • Ability to empathize with clients and maintain a non-judgmental, supportive approach.
  • Capacity to motivate clients toward behavior change and long-term recovery.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies.
  • Adaptability to meet the unique needs of diverse client populations.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards at all times.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods (e.g., during client interviews, documentation, or meetings)
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility as needed
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, and handling documents
  • Visual and auditory ability to observe clients and respond to verbal cues or distress
  • Ability to lift or carry up to 10–15 lbs (e.g., files, materials)

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC or CADC)
  • Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC)
